Chapter Nine

AMY

I tossed and turned on my small cot in the recovery room. Flooded with emotions that weren’t all mine, this spirit mate business wasn’t for me.

I rolled to my other side and got an eyeful of the silver male whose spirit was breezing around inside me. It was beyond strange to feel the echo of another’s essence. His was in turmoil and as restless as I felt.

Maxxon’s eyes were closed, yet I could feel he was awake. He was a gorgeous male with a spectacular physique. His body made for camouflage with color shifting scales smoother than the softest leather. The heavy markings on his chest and arms reminded me of tribal tattoos, glowed a soft silver in the dim light emitted from the solaries rocks embedded in the walls.

I was adrift in my own skin. Something told me if I just gave myself over to the bond, the emptiness in my heart would be filled.

I stifled the urge to crawl into Maxxon’s cot parallel to mine. I didn’t trust myself to give in to even the most chaste of touches. He said in order for us to break the spirit mate bond, there could be no more sex, and it would eventually wither away.

Why did the thought of losing Maxxon’s echo inside me make me want to curl up and cry like a baby?

I wasn’t in love with Maxxon. I wasn’t. It was absurd to think I could fall in love with a guy in the short time we’d been together, even if he had saved my life.

Sure, I had strong feelings for him, and he was the best sex I had ever had in my life, but that was all there was to it. Nothing more.

I rolled to my other side, fluffed the rolled-up blanket I was using as a pillow and tried to concentrate on sleeping and not the spicy-scented, sexy elf guy an arm’s length away.

“I can’t sleep,” I huffed. “And we never talked about the virus.”

A thick purring filled the stuffy air inside the recovery room. My body loosened and I relaxed for the first time since we laid down to rest.

Soft, sifting sounds of a big body floated over. I rolled to face Maxxon who had moved to lay on his side. “No, we didn’t.”

“I guess we got a little distracted.” I tried to lighten the tense mood.

“You are a female most worthy of distraction.”

My entire body blushed over his compliment. His swirling stare held me captive while my insides twisted in knots. Maxxon felt like home. Maybe because I felt safe when I was with him. Or maybe it was the echo of his soul encompassing my heart.

His face became wavy, and I blinked back the press of tears. Torn between wanting Maxxon and wanting to go home, it felt like I was being pulled in two different directions at once.

“Come here, female.” Maxxon sat up and held his arms out to me.

Without a second thought, I launched myself off my cot. He caught me easily and settled me on his lap.
